The Whydah Gally was built in London in 1716 as a 300-ton, three-masted galley designed for the transatlantic slave trade. After completing one voyage transporting enslaved people from Africa to the Caribbean, the ship was captured in February 1717 by the pirate Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy near the Bahamas.
