The tidal level is within 1 meter of the river level which means the Barrage automatically allows between 6-12 cubic meters of water over gate 1 every second to allow migratory fish to jump the Barrage. As the tide gets higher the jump gets smaller, the gates only lift back up if the tide gets higher than the river ( this results in reverse flow and let's salt water upstream) or if the tide goes out further than 1m below river level.
